Price matching sounds like a guaranteed refund if you find the same booking cheaper elsewhere. In practice the conditions are narrow enough that most claims fail — and understanding why is the difference between using it successfully and wasting an hour on a rejected claim.
The short answer
Price match only applies to an identical booking that is publicly available and bookable at the moment you claim. The match must be for the same dates, the same room or fare type, and the same cancellation terms, on a site the policy accepts. A lower price that differs in any of those respects is not a match, which is why most claims are declined.
What has to be identical
Every one of these conditions usually has to hold. One mismatch is enough to reject a claim.
| Requirement | What usually breaks it |
|---|---|
| Same dates and number of nights | A different check-out date, even by a day |
| Same room or fare type | Non-refundable versus flexible; a different seat or cabin class |
| Same cancellation terms | Matching a flexible price against your non-refundable booking |
| Same occupancy | Adults and children counted differently |
| Publicly available | Member-only, loyalty, corporate or promo-code rates |
| Bookable at the time of claiming | A price that expired, sold out, or was a cached page |
| Eligible comparison site | Policies typically exclude auction, opaque and some membership sites |
The two that cause the most rejections: cancellation terms and membership pricing. A member rate or a promo code you happen to hold is almost never accepted as a comparison, because it is not a price available to the general public.
The process, and where people go wrong
- Book first. Price matching is generally a post-booking claim, not a pre-booking negotiation. You pay, then claim.
- Find the lower price and capture it properly. You need the full price including taxes and fees, on a page that is publicly reachable without logging in. Screenshot the room type, dates, total price and the URL.
- Submit within the window. These are typically short — often 24 hours from booking, sometimes until the day before check-in. Late claims are rejected regardless of merit.
- Submit once, completely. Missing evidence is the most common reason a valid claim fails. Include the comparison total, not just the nightly rate.
- Expect the refund as a difference, not a rebooking. Where a claim succeeds, the outcome is usually the price difference credited back, sometimes as site credit rather than cash.
Why claims get rejected
- Taxes and fees were excluded. A lower nightly rate with higher resort fees is not a lower total. Compare totals or expect rejection.
- The comparison was a member or loyalty rate. Not publicly available, so not eligible.
- The terms did not match. Comparing a flexible rate against your non-refundable booking is the single most common mismatch.
- The price changed. Price matching is assessed at the moment of claiming. If the competitor's price went back up, the claim fails even if it was genuinely lower when you booked.
- You booked the comparison first. Some policies exclude claims where you also hold a booking at the competitor, or where the lower price was found after a change to your own booking.
- The window had closed. These are short by design.
Is it worth using?
Yes, but with realistic expectations. It is strongest for hotels, where publicly listed rates genuinely vary and the comparison is easy to document. It is weakest for flights, where fares are sold through the same systems, so a genuinely lower public price for an identical itinerary is uncommon — and where fare-class differences make exact matching difficult.
It is also worth weighing against the alternative: if the difference is small, the flexible rate that lets you change your plans is often worth more than the price difference you are chasing.
Do this instead, or as well
- Compare before booking. Ten minutes of comparison is worth more than a price-match claim, and it cannot be rejected.
- Price the property direct. Hotels frequently beat third-party rates for their own rooms — see bundling versus booking separately.
- Consider the total, not the rate. Resort and destination fees frequently reverse the ranking of two options — our flight true cost calculator does that arithmetic for flights and bags.
- Book the flexible rate if the trip might change. It is usually worth the premium — see refundable versus non-refundable.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Expedia price matching work?
You book first, then submit a claim within a short window, typically 24 hours. The comparison must be publicly available and bookable, for the same dates, room or fare type, occupancy and cancellation terms. If it qualifies, the difference is refunded, often as site credit.
Why was my price match claim rejected?
The most common reasons are a mismatch in cancellation terms, a comparison that used a member or promo rate, or taxes and fees being excluded so the totals were not actually different. A price that has since changed also fails, because matching is assessed at the time of claiming.
Does price matching apply to flights?
It usually can, but it rarely succeeds. Airline fares are sold through the same distribution systems, so a genuinely lower public price for an identical itinerary is uncommon, and fare-class differences make an exact match difficult.
Can I price match after I have already flown or checked in?
Generally no. Claims must be submitted within the stated window, which is usually measured from the booking rather than from travel, and is short.
Do I get cash or credit if my claim succeeds?
Frequently site credit rather than a cash refund, and it can be subject to the terms of the programme issuing it. Check what form the difference takes before relying on it.
Is it better to compare prices before booking?
Yes. Comparison cannot be rejected, has no deadline and costs you nothing but time. Price matching is worth using as a second line of defence, not a first strategy.
Doing the comparison properly means holding dates, room type and cancellation terms fixed while you check several sources — which is more work than it sounds, and the reason most price-match claims fail. If you would rather have it run for you, our agents can compare the options in one call.
